Designed in 1951 by Swiss designer Gian Franco Legler for the Basket restaurant in Italy. The 29-year-old designer contracted local basket weavers and locksmiths to manufacture the first 52 chairs. The Basket chair was made of rattan pulut.

The Basket Chair quickly became a success, not only in Italy and Switzerland but also in Germany and the United States. In 1953 Gian Franco Legler received the Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York for the Basket Chair.
